Acquisition

What is an acquisition?

An acquisition is a corporate action where one company, the acquirer, purchases most or all of another company's, the target, shares to gain control of that company. Acquisitions are commonly made as part of a company's growth strategy.

The acquisition process typically involves negotiations between the acquirer and the target company. Once an agreement is reached, the deal is often financed through cash, stock, or a combination of both. Post-acquisition, the target company may be absorbed into the acquiring company and cease to exist, or it may continue to operate as a subsidiary. The expected benefits of acquisitions include increased market share, diversification, cost efficiencies, and more.
