83(b) election

What is an 83(b) election?

An 83(b) election allows you to pay tax on stock you're issued at the time it was granted, rather than when it vests.

This is very advantageous for startup founders, and you definitely want to do this. You have to do it within 30 days of the equity being issued to you, though, and there isn't leeway for getting this wrong. Definitely check with your lawyer.
